Collision between Santa Ana and Bribon

Santa Ana and Bribon have retired from fifth race of the Breitling MedCup, Trofeo Balearia following a collision at the second windward mark.
The conditions at the time were about 13 knots in moderate seas. Santa Ana were making a port tack approach to the mark and tried to bear away but collided with Bribon.
Santa Ana has suffered extensive damage to her bow, while Bribon has a one metre gash on the port side of the boat.
“We were approaching the second windward mark on port tack and I felt that we could get past Bribon who was to starboard of us. As we got closer we tried to bear away behind them but we slowed up and I was unable to give anyone enough warning.
I tried to avoid the collision by tacking up but was unable to. We were completely at fault,” commented Adrian Stead, tactician of Santa Ana.
“It is sad that it has taken both Santa Ana and Bribon out of the Breitling MedCup but we will be back next year,” concluded Stuart Robinson, owner of Santa Ana Stay Calm.
For their part Bribon is grateful for the statement of Santa Ana and their sportsmanlike behaviour in coming to see them when they reached the dock, to apologise for the incident.
It is most likely that the damage is so extensive that Bribon will be unable to continue racing.
No crew members from either boat were injured in the incident.
